ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Rain in the area did not affect play too much during the final day of the UCF Invitational Monday, where the UCF women's tennis team delivered several impressive wins to close out the event.
"I think we got a lot of good, competitive matches under our belt," head coach Stephanie Nickitas said. "It was a great way to start off and prepare for our regular-season matches coming up this week. Overall, I'm quite happy with everybody's performance."
Battling hard all weekend long, the UCF duo of Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson played two-straight matches vs. Furman and Iowa that required tiebreakers. But on Monday they came through with a huge win as they defeated Florida State's top team of Daneika Borthwick and Amy Sargeant, 8-6.
Playing together for the first time since the fall, Clare Mendell teamed with Caroline Eberhart for an 8-6 triumph over Iowa's Caitlin Hindmarsh and Annette Dohanics. Overall, the freshmen tandem now have three wins as a doubles pair in 2012-13.
The Knights then posted four victories on the singles courts against Furman, including three straight-set wins. Lorbergs edged Lauren Kline, 7-6(2), 7-5, Mendell topped Jenny Porter, 6-2, 6-2, and Katie Spivak notched a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Margaret Boyette. In one of the best matches of the day, Haraldson inched past Amanda Murray, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(9).
UCF's dual-match schedule is up next, and it begins this weekend when it hosts Bethune-Cookman Friday at 2 p.m. and Florida A&M Saturday at noon.
