ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The spring season officially kicked off Saturday when the UCF women's tennis team opened the UCF Invitational. The majority of the Knights battled Furman in doubles play while also taking on Iowa in singles.
Action started up at 10 a.m. from the UCF Tennis Complex with all four programs competing in doubles. Entering with a 1-1 record together from the fall, Caroline Eberhart and Courtney Griffith slipped past Furman's Margaret Boyette and Kelly Sullivan, 8-4, for the first win of the day. Clare Mendell teamed up with Florida State's Kristina Schleich in an 8-5 triumph over Iowa's Katie Zordani and Annette Dohanics.
Singles was up next for the Black and Gold, which picked up four victories Saturday. The tightest match of the day occurred in a three-set thriller where Eberhart edged Iowa's Christina Harazin, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. It was Eberhart's team-leading eighth victory in what is just her freshman season with the Knights.
Needing just two sets for a win, Griffith topped Zordani, 6-3, 7-5,while Sofia Baptista delivered a 7-6, 7-5 win over Dohanics. Mendell was the lone Knight who did not compete against a Hawkeye, as she battled Boyette and came through with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 win.
The event, which does not affect the teams' dual-match records, will continue Sunday at 10 a.m., and day three will conclude action Monday beginning at 9 a.m.
