DALLAS, Texas (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team had no way to cool down Conference USA's best 3-point shooting team on Sunday as the Knights dropped a 69-54 decision at SMU.
Although the Knights (6-10, 0-2) held Kansas transfer Keena Mays (25.0 points per game) to just six points, SMU (11-4, 2-0) used a 43.8-percent performance from behind the arc to make up for it.
Playing in front of her family and home state of Texas, senior Gevenia Carter led UCF with 19 points. She was joined in double figures by Erika Jones (10 points). Stephanie Taylor led UCF in rebounding for the third-straight game with eight rebounds and Sara Djassi swiped a game-high four steals.
UCF jutted out to a 7-4 lead in the first seven minutes as its defense continually found ways to tip balls to disrupt the Mustangs' offense. But the tables turned when SMU went on a 20-2 run as the team forced the Knights into committing nine turnovers during the stretch.
Carter ended the drought with less than five minutes remaining with a jumper off a pass from Andrea Hines and the Knights eventually went into halftime trailing 34-19.
Carter fired up UCF with the second half's first seven points off an inside jumper, a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer that forced SMU to call a timeout as its lead trimmed to 34-26.
Baker sank two of her career-high five 3-pointers to get the Mustangs back on course and even though the Knights played SMU even in the second half, 35-35, they couldn't steal a win in Moody Coliseum.
The Knights return to Orlando when they host Southern Miss on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Knights for Youth Day.
