ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - After an incredible performance in his collegiate debut, UCF guard Matt Williams was named the Conference USA Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week Monday. On Saturday, Williams had a memorable start to his UCF career in the Knights' victory over Florida Tech.
After missing UCF's first five games of the season recovering from an illness, the Orlando native scored 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting from 3-point range in only 13 minutes of action. The former Jones High School star's seven 3-pointers tied for fourth on the UCF single-game triples list. Eighteen of Williams' points came after intermission.
"This is a wonderful honor for Matt," UCF head coach Donnie Jones said. "Matt showed great courage and determination to come back after his illness and everyone was so happy for him and his family when he stepped back onto the court Saturday."
Williams and the Knights will return to action on Dec. 12 when they host Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. at the UCF Arena.
