ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team turned its hot start into a dominating 64-43 win Sunday afternoon against Bethune-Cookman.
The Knights (3-6) jumped out on a 16-3 run and never looked back as the defense flustered the Wildcats (2-5) into committing 33 turnovers - the most turnovers by a UCF opponent in the Joi Williams era.
UCF senior guard Gevenia Carter posted a game-high 17 points for her sixth-straight game in double figures while freshman Briahanna Jackson contributed 13 points. Sophomore guard Andrea Hines filled the stat sheet with eight points, a team-high nine rebounds and game-high five assists in 28 minutes.
UCF held B-CU's leading scorer Chastity Rene Taylor, who had been averaging 16 points per game heading into Sunday, to just two points. Terrenisha Hollis paced the team with 11 points.
As the Knights led 4-0 in the first three minutes, Carter came in off the bench as a spark plug who quickly upped the advantage to 9-0. She netted a transition layup off a long pass from Hines before stealing the Wildcats' inbound pass and converting a three-point play the old fashioned way.
Sara Djassi swished a trey from the left wing at the two-minute warning to ignite the Knights on a 7-0 run to close out the half with a 35-18 lead.
UCF quickly hit a 20-point advantage in the second half when Carter drained a trey off an assist from Hines less than three minutes after the break.
Although B-CU cut the deficit to 11 with 8:29 to go with Shakeyia Colyer's layup, the Knights regrouped with a 12-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 62-39, with 2:29 remaining thanks to Kiana Morton's layup, her first points as a Knight.
UCF will take a break from action for finals week before traveling to Miami to meet FIU on Dec. 13 at 6 p.m.
