HURRICANE, W.Va. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF men's soccer senior Eduardo Jimenez picked the right time to score his first goal of the season Saturday. With only three seconds remaining in regulation, Jimenez scored to give the Knights a 1-0 victory over Marshall in their regular-season finale, which earned UCF a spot in next week's Conference USA Championship.
With only 10 seconds left, Omar Vallejo sent a corner kick into the box, and after the ball was deflected, Jimenez fired a shot past Marshall (11-5-1, 3-5-0 C-USA) keeper Daniel Withrow to give the Knights (8-6-3, 5-3-0) the improbable victory.
"That was one of the best college soccer games that I have been a part of," UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "I couldn't be happier for our guys. We knew a month ago that these last two road games would be meaningful, and they were. Our team has shown so much fight this year and to win five matches in this league is not easy to do."
On Wednesday, the Knights posted a 1-0 win at Kentucky.
Saturday's match was played in cold conditions with the temperature in the low 40s and rain falling periodically during the contest.
The Herd finished with a 20-9 shot advantage, but were unable to get the ball into the back of the net as Sebastian Evers picked up his second-straight shutout for the Knights. He recorded four saves in the win.
The victory was the fifth-straight for UCF over Marshall.
The C-USA Championship will start Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala.
