ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The academic accolades continue to roll in for UCF volleyball's senior captains, Tory McCutcheon and Meredith Murphy. On Friday, the pair was named to the 2012 Conference USA All-Academic Volleyball Team. This is the third-consecutive season that McCutcheon has been named to the all-academic squad by the league and the second-consecutive season she has been a unanimous selection. Murphy was honored for the first time by the league.
With the award, McCutcheon became the only Knight since UCF joined the league in 2005 to be named to the team three times.
Overall, McCutcheon boasts a 3.91 GPA in molecular & microbiology while Murphy maintains a 3.64 GPA in communication sciences and disorders.
"Having two seniors being first team-all academic really highlights the true attitude of the program and the legacy that they each leave behind," UCF head coach Todd Dagenais said. "It's no secret that they were our team captains and I suspect that the team the chose them not only because of their performance on the court, but because of their performance in the classroom."
"Both of them have career plans to serve people," Dagenais continued. "Meredith is looking to help those with communication issues, especially deaf children, which as many of our fans know is something that's really close to my heart with our daughter Jocie being deaf. Tory is finishing up the process of her medical school applications and some medical school is going to be very lucky to have her because Tory is a woman that is going to go on to be a fantastic doctor."
This is the second academic award of the season for McCutcheon as she was a Capital One Academic All-District selection and is up for a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America team.
With academic awards in hand, the Knights will continue to prepare for the postseason as they are set to battle Marshall tonight in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Championship at 8 p.m. in Tulsa, Okla.
