ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - There was no stopping the No. 21 UCF women's soccer team Friday night in its 7-0 win over East Carolina on Senior Weekend.
Six different Knights notched the seven goals - the most offensive production in a game since 2004. Notably, goals 2-4 were scored within 1:37 of each other, marking the sixth-fastest time three-consecutive goals have been scored in a match in NCAA history.
UCF (12-4-1, 6-3-0) scored four goals against the Pirates (8-6-3, 4-2-3) in the first 11 minutes of play. Prior to Friday night, ECU was riding a five-game unbeaten streak, had not given up a goal in 510 minutes and had only allowed two goals during conference play all season.
"The seniors were huge tonight. The whole team rallied around them," UCF head coach Amanda Cromwell said. "Scoring four goals in the first 11 minutes of the game -- we just sat there like `Wow.' I don't know how another team could recover from that. We were just phenomenal in our finishing."
Appropriately enough, senior forward Tishia Jewell scored the first goal of the game just before the 6-minute mark. As a ECU defender tried to clear the ball out of the box, Jewell rebounded and put it away in the top left corner.
Midfielder Andrea Rodrigues came in with the next goal at 9:05 when defender Ashley Nicol sent a cross from the right corner to Jennifer Martin, who found Rodrigues for her first goal of the season.
"It felt good to not only come out with a win, but to come away with a huge win, especially against a team that usually gives us some trouble," Rodrigues said. "Tonight I had my first goal of this season. I was glad to finally get that chip off my shoulder. I'm very proud of our team."
At 10:08, Martin connected for a goal of her own after UCF drew a foul and a free kick. Jewell touched the free kick to Nicol, who sent a nice ball inside of the box.
At 10:42, after a scramble inside the box, Martin managed to forward a ball while she was sprawled on the ground to an awaiting Sophie Howard, who jetted a ball to the post. It took once bounce and rolled into the net for a 4-0 lead.
After halftime, UCF didn't stop the deluge as Alex Piercy found Kristina Trujic in the 65th minute for her first assist and Trujic's second goal of the year.
Jewell netted her second multi-goal game of the year when April Asby threw in a long ball to Jewell on the far post. Her header was saved, but she rebounded quickly and her second attempt was good for a 6-0 lead with less than five minutes remaining.
The final goal of the game came in the last seven seconds when Jewell sent a ball into Kayla Darden, who finished for the first goal of her career.
The 7-0 victory also secured UCF's 10th shutout of the year as the defense allowed just one corner kick and three shots during the game.
"I'm very proud of the defense and the overall effort and the players who came in off the bench," Cromwell said. "Kayla got the first goal of her career tonight in the last seven seconds of the game. It shows you we're not going to take our foot off the pedal from game to game, minute to minute."
UCF will play its final home match of the season Sunday at 1 p.m. versus Marshall. The team will wear special pink jerseys in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Prizes will be raffled, including two Blue Man Group tickets, two free weeks of airport parking, 10 free Chick-fil-A sandwich coupons and more. A team autograph session will also be held after the match.
