EL PASO, Texas (UCFAthletics.com) - The No. 16 UCF women's soccer team returned to form Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory at UTEP. The Knights (11-4-1, 5-3-0) shut out their fifth conference opponent of the season and ninth opponent overall to remain unbeaten by the Miners (10-7-0, 3-5-0) since 2005.
Forward Jennifer Martin came through for the Knights when they needed it most, netting a goal for the second-consecutive match in the 78th minute. Ashley Nicol's free kick found Martin on the wing for the first game-winner of her career.
"She's a very composed player," UCF head coach Amanda Cromwell said of Martin. "She puts herself in good positions. She's a smart player and she plays off [Nicolette Radovcic] and [Tishia Jewell] and the other attacking players well. She's a good compliment because she's very different from them."
The Knights limited the Miners to two corner kicks and just four shots on goal - all of which goalkeeper Lianne Maldonado saved to keep the shutout intact.
"It's tough to play here because there's always a wind here, and in the second half it was against us," Cromwell said. "Our whole group - the defenders, Sophie (Howard) and Madison (Barney) in the mid, Lianne, Sokhara Goodall coming in off the bench - played well. It was a grind it out type of game for sure."
UCF returns to Orlando Friday to host East Carolina before Sunday's senior day against Marshall.
"We're looking to get two wins and have our seniors lead the way," Cromwell said. "We talked about that before the game today. We know what we want to accomplish here coming into the end of the season and the NCAA tournament. The seniors need to lead the charge, and the underclassmen will rally around them."
UCF's soccer scarf is now available for a discounted price of $15 and includes entry to the remaining home games. The Gold Pass, which includes season tickets to all volleyball, men's and women's soccer, women's basketball, softball and track and field contests, is also available now.
