(UCFAthletics.com) - Playing its Conference USA road opener, the UCF men's soccer team had its two-match winning streak come to an end Sunday as host South Carolina posted a 2-1 victory at Stone Stadium. The Gamecocks grabbed a 2-0 lead and then held off a late UCF rally after Andrew Quintana scored for the Knights in the 61st minute.
UCF fell to 4-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in league play. With the win, South Carolina moved to 4-5-2 and 1-2-1.
"Today wasn't our day," UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "When you go down two goals on the road, it is difficult to comeback. We scratched and clawed to get one goal, but in the end it wasn't enough. We need to learn from our mistakes and come back ready to go Wednesday against Stetson."
Hunter Wyer got the hosts on the board late in the first half when he headed in a cross from Jeffrey Torda to the far post. In the 58th minute, UCF keeper Sebastian Evers stopped a shot from Snoopy Davidson, but Ryan Arambula scored for the Gamecocks off the rebound to give South Carolina a 2-0 advantage.
The Knights were playing the first of four C-USA road matches this year.
Quintana's goal was the first of his career. The senior defender got the Knights within a score of the Gamecocks when he found the back of the net from 25 yards out, beating South Carolina keeper Alex Long.
Evers finished with six saves Sunday. UCF totaled 15 shots, with the hosts recording 16 shots. Deshorn Brown had four total shots, with two coming on goal, for the Knights.
UCF will return to action Wednesday, hosting local foe Stetson at 7 p.m. at the UCF Soccer Complex. The match with the Hatters will serve as the Knights' final regular-season non-conference contest of the season.
