ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF women's soccer defender Marissa Diggs was selected as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The appointment marks the first of her career.
The Rowlett, Texas, native was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Week. Diggs was one of three defenders in the country who garnered the distinction.
She commanded a defense that locked up two shutouts over the weekend to bring the Knights' season total to seven, which currently paces C-USA.
Diggs played all 180 minutes this weekend to lead a defensive charge that held Houston and Rice to just nine shots and five corners combined. She helped limit Rice to just two shots and two corners as the Knights snapped the Owls' then-league-best unbeaten streak at five and delivered Rice's first conference loss of the season.
Diggs was recognized as the C-USA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and now joins a trio of Knights who have been praised for their efforts this season. Midfielder Madison Barney was named the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3, and forwards Jennifer Martin (Aug. 20) and Tishia Jewell(Sept. 3) were named Offensive Players of the Week.
The Knights are in the middle of a four-match homestand and next host Tulsa at 7 p.m. on Friday. UCF (9-2-1, 3-1-0) is currently riding a six-game home-winning streak.
