ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - With the central Florida area having a rich tradition of space exploration, UCF's game against East Carolina Thursday, Oct. 4, at 8 p.m. will feature a special treat for all fans in attendance. Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, will represent the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation as they present a $10,000 check to UCF honors student Chris Frye during a second-quarter break in the game.
Mitchell was part of the Apollo 14 mission that took off from nearby Kennedy Space Center in 1971 with Stuart A. Roosa and Alan Shepard, Jr. Mitchell earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and was inducted into the Space Hall of Fame in 1979 and the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1998. A U.S. Navy captain during his career, Mitchell was a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.
Frye is a graduate of Lake Mary High School, and is a beneficiary of attending a school like UCF which is one of just 27 in the nation that are eligible to have nominees/recipients for the scholarship.
