ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team opened the 2012-13 campaign Sunday with the first round of the Cougar Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston.

The Knights carded a first-round score of 294 (+8) to rank 12th among the 24-team field, which includes 10 of the top 15 teams from last year's NCAA Championships, including each of the top five.

"I'm pleased with the team's play today," head coach Emily Marron said. "It was a good opening round and we are in a good position in a strong field. They fought back really well on the back nine. We will take that momentum out with us tomorrow morning and try to make a move up the leader board. We played well, but feel we can shoot some low numbers on this course."

Robyn Doig led the way for UCF after carding an even-par round of 72, which has her in a tie for 20th place. Carolin Pinegger recorded a 73 (+1) and is tied for 33rd after the first round. Kaitlyn Price turned in a 74 (+2) and is tied for 49th after one round, while Monifa Sealy (75, +3) is currently tied for 60th.

The Cougar Classic continues Monday and runs through Tuesday.
