ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF women's tennis' first fall event came to a close Sunday when it met up with Marquette in doubles and Stetson in singles at the Knights Invitational. Closing out the weekend, Josephine Haraldson went 3-0 in doubles and 2-0 in singles for a perfect 5-0 record.
"Overall I think I'm pretty pleased with the weekend," head coach Stephanie Nickitas said. "It's always good to see what people are going to do in competition. Because we have so many new players, it was important to get out there in pressure situations and see how everyone is playing and competing. We had some really good results overall, and we know what we have to work on now.
"We have a lot of young women who have a lot of shots, but it's mainly what's going on between the ears and working on the mental aspect of the game. Shot selection, point structure, keeping emotions in check and really analyzing what's going on out there are the next steps for most of our players."
Haraldson and doubles partner Genevieve Lorbergs capped off their solid weekend together with an 8-5 triumph over Marquette's Ana Pimienta and Erin Gebes. The Knights' other three doubles tandems also earned victories, with Courtney Griffith and Sofia Baptista breezing by Rocio Diaz and Aleeza Kanner, 8-1. Wrapping up doubles action, Caroline Eberhart and Jenna Doerfler posted a close 9-8(5) decision vs. Aina Hernandez and Ali Dawson, and Clare Mendell and Katie Spivak topped Laia Hernandez and Vanessa Foltinger, 8-5.
Eberhart equaled Haraldson in overall victories at the Knights Invitational for the Black and Gold. The freshman was 5-1, highlighted by a 6-1, 7-5 singles win against Stetson's Jen Miller Sunday. Haraldson only gave up six games as well in a 6-3, 6-3 verdict against Lindsey Cable. Also for the Knights vs. the Hatters, Doerfler added a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sara Lazarevic, and Griffith collected a close 4-6, 6-1,1-0(10-8) victory vs. Diana Bukajeva.
Recording her first win at the Division I level, junior-college transfer Ann-Sophie Porry got past Rachel Luke, 6-3, 6-1.
UCF's next action in the fall season will be Oct. 5-7 when it takes part in the 2012 C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational at Rollins College.
