ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The preseason officially came to an end for the UCF women's tennis team Friday as it hosted day one of the Knights Invitational. The Black and Gold went 6-3 in singles play and 2-2 on the doubles courts vs. a field consisting of Florida Gulf Coast, Marquette and Stetson.
Doubles was first on tap at the UCF Tennis Complex, and in the Knights' two victories vs. FGCU they combined to surrender only two games. Genevieve Lorbergs teamed with Josephine Haraldson for an 8-0 shutout of Morgan Bechtel and Marina Diez. Meanwhile, a pair of freshmen started their collegiate careers on a high note when Caroline Eberhart and Katie Spivak produced an 8-2 victory over Gyanna Mandic and Zhoe Solaun.
The majority of the UCF roster then faced Marquette in singles play. On the show court, Lorbergs delivered a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Ana Pimienta, and her doubles partner Haraldson walked away with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Ali Dawson. Courtney Griffith also shined in her match against Rocio Diaz, posting a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Going 2-0 on the day, Eberhart cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory vs. Vanessa Foltinger, and freshman Clare Mendell used three sets for her first-career win, topping Aleeza Kanner, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0(10-4).
During the matches against the Golden Eagles, freshman Sofia Baptista was busy collecting her first win in a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Diez from FGCU.
UCF will continue play with the three-day Knights Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m. when it faces Stetson in doubles and FGCU in singles.
