FORT MYERS, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team opened up play Friday at the FGCU Fall Invitational with senior Jorge Blasco and freshman Pedro Wagner advancing to the quarterfinal round. The three-day tournament will resume Saturday morning.
The FGCU Fall Invitational is serving as UCF's second event of the fall.
Aside from Blasco and Wagner notching wins, the doubles teams of Matthew Gladstone /Juan Bolona and Wagner/Francesc Aulina both advanced to the semifinal round. Wagner and Aulina topped Barry, 8-6, while Gladstone and Bolona topped an FAU duo, 9-8 (5).
In the first round on Friday, four Knights advanced to the second, including Gladstone (6-3, 6-4), Wagner (7-6 (5), 6-5), Blasco (bye) and Mario Samson (6-1, 6-5). Looking for a spot in the quarterfinals, Wagner wasted no time in disposing of Barry's Olivier Lemaitre, 6-3, 6-0.
Joining his fellow teammate in the quarters was Blasco who blasted Dylan Gunning of FGCU, 6-0, 6-2. The senior from Alicante, Spain, has put together a strong fall thus far. In Gainesville two weeks ago, he advanced to the round of 16 in the loaded tournament.
