ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - It will be a busy weekend for the UCF women's tennis team as it opens up its fall schedule Friday-Sunday with the Knights Invitational. Action will take place at the UCF Tennis Complex and admission is free all three days of the event.
UCF will be batting Florida Gulf Coast, Stetson and Marquette in both doubles and singles action. Each team will play one doubles match and one singles match per day, with Friday and Saturday starting at 10 a.m. The third and final day of the Knights Invitational will feature a first serve at 9 a.m. Sunday.
The Knights are led by sixth-year head coach Stephanie Nickitas, who has produced at least 10 spring dual-match wins every year in Orlando. Jenna Doerfler and Genevieve Lorbergs make up this year's senior class, while the overall roster features five newcomers.
Marquette has already kicked off its fall slate, participating in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. In that event, Vanessa Foltinger, Erin Gebes and Laia Hernandez Soler each posted 3-0 singles records. This past spring, it finished with a 12-11 overall record in dual-match play. In 2011, UCF topped Marquette, 4-3, in Orlando.
Stetson also has some competition to its credit this fall, traveling to the College of Charleston Invitational Sept. 14-16. A year ago, the Hatters were 14-7, but fell to the Knights in Orlando April 4, 5-2.
Similar to UCF, the Knights Invitational will be the first action of the fall for Florida Gulf Coast. FGCU went 10-11 last season including a 6-1 loss to the Black and Gold in Ft. Myers Feb. 18.
After this weekend, UCF's next action on the schedule will be the C.L. Varner Invitational in Winter Park.
