ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The No. 6 UCF women's soccer team embarks on its final season of Conference USA play this weekend in the hunt for its fifth regular-season title since joining the league in 2005. The Knights (6-1-1) travel to preseason favorite Memphis (4-3-0) on Friday at 8 p.m. EDT before heading to UAB (1-7-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT.
WFTV Channel 9 previewed the Knights' conference-opening weekend during its Wednesday 6 p.m. news broadcast. To view the segment, click here.
Although UCF has not beaten Memphis since 2008, the Knights have the Tigers' number on their home turf. UCF owns a 3-0-1 record against its conference rival at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
UCF, who is on a five-match unbeaten streak, holds a 5-2-0 record in C-USA openers. Freshman Sophie Howardwill play in just her second game after making her collegiate debut last weekend in the 3-1 win over North Florida. Howard missed the majority of the non-conference season because she was competing for her home country of Germany in the U-20 World Cup in Japan.
Senior midfielder Andrea Rodrigues, who was in Denmark this week competing with the Portugal national team, flew all day Thursday to meet the Knights in Memphis for her final conference opener.
Memphis' Christabel Oduro leads the team with five goals and 12 points while Christa Strickland and Becca Brown have split time in goal. The Tigers have won three of their last four matches and are currently hosting a six-match homestand.
UAB broke into the win-column last weekend with a 2-1 victory at Stetson. The Blazers return to Birmingham for the first time since Aug. 31 and are currently led by Johanna Liney's three goals and seven points.
