The UCF men's golf team holds a one-stroke lead after the first two rounds of play at the Adams Cup of Newport, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. Monday's opening rounds were held at historic Newport Country Club.
The Knights were 15-over par on Monday, carding a first-round score of 286 (+6) and a second-round tally of 289 (+9), for a total score of 575.
UCF was paced by Ricardo Gouveia, who shot back-to-back rounds of 70 to stand at even par after the first day of competition. Gouveia is tied with Yale's Sam Bernstein for the individual lead in the tournament.
Greg Eason (70-74-144, +4) is tied for fifth place, while Kyle Wilshire was right behind. Wilshire is tied for seventh (73, 72-145, +5). Jose Joia rounded out the scoring for UCF. He is 7-over for the tournament (74-73-147) and is tied for 14th individually. Michael Visacki (73-76-149, +9) also competed and is tied for 20th as an individual.
In the team competition, Yale was tied with the Knights after the first round, with both squads firing a 286. But Yale put a 290 on the scorecard in the second round, trailing the Knights by one stroke. The top five of the 12-team tournament is rounded out by Villanova (292-301-593, +33), Johnson & Wales (296-299-595, +35) and Connecticut (293-307-600, +40).
Tuesday's third and final round will be played at Carnegie Abbey Club. UCF will take its one-stroke lead into the final round, looking to defend its 2010 and 2011 Adams Cup titles.
