ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's soccer team was unable to get the result it desired Friday as the Knights played Jacksonville to a 2-2 double-overtime draw at the UCF Soccer Complex. UCF outshot the Dolphins 26-10, but needed a goal from Deshorn Brown in the 83rd minute to send the game into extra time.
UCF moves to 2-2-1 on the year following the tie, while Jacksonville improved its record to 0-5-1.
The Knights grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 57th minute when Steven Lamberta popped a shot over Jacksonville goalkeeper Gavin Carlin's head, but the Dolphins responded. Jacksonville scored two goals in a four-minute span, including Gavin Craig's tally in the 66th minute than gave the visitors a 2-1 edge.
Following Brown's goal, a header off an Omar Vallejo free kick, UCF had a few more scoring chances at the end of regulation and in each overtime period, but was unable to find the back of the net.
"I am extremely disappointed with the guys tonight," UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "The effort was not good in giving up two goals; and not finishing chances. It is great that we scored two goals. We could have scored six goals. It is not good enough."
UCF dominated the action in the first half, recording 10 shots, compared to only two for the Dolphins. The Knights had three excellent scoring opportunities in the first half, including a shot by Michael Russo from 25 yards out less than 10 minutes into the contest that hit the cross bar.
Two minutes later, McKauly Tulloch nearly scored in the box off a great pass from A.J. Nelson, but his shot went high. Seventeen minutes into the game, Brown nearly found the back of the net, but his header off a Vallejo corner was high.
The Knights were playing just their second home match of the regular season and were in action at the UCF Soccer Complex for the first time since Sept. 1.
UCF finished with a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Carlin totaled six saves for the Dolphins, including some from close range.
The contest against Jacksonville was part of a UCF soccer doubleheader. The UCF women's team began the evening with a 3-1 win over North Florida.
UCF will return to action on Sept. 22 at Florida Gulf Coast. The squad's next home match is set for Sept. 26 against 2011 national runner-up Charlotte.
