The UCF men's golf team will take part in the 19th annual Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic at the Newport Country Club and Carnegie Abbey Club Monday and Tuesday. The Knights won the Adams Cup in both 2010 and 2011. They will be one of 12 teams from eight different conferences taking part in the tournament.
The first two rounds of the tournament will be played at the historic Newport Country Club, with the third round set to take place at the Carnegie Abbey Club.
Newport Country Club,, founded in 1893, hosted both the first U.S. Amateur Championship and the first U.S. Open in 1895. Most recently, Newport C.C. hosted the 2006 U.S. Women's Open. It was also the site of Tiger Woods' victory in the 1995 U.S. Amateur. First designed as a nine-hole course by William Davis, it was later expanded to 18 holes in 1915 by renowned golf course architect Donald Ross. Another renovation in 1923 was conducted by A.W. Tillinghast - the architect behind Winged Foot and Baltusrol.
"We're excited about playing at a course with such a great history," UCF head coach Bryce Wallor said. "Our players will be tested by some of the best golf has to offer."
The golf course at the Carnegie Abbey Club represents a transplant of traditional golfing values from Scotland-birthplace of the royal and ancient game-to Portsmouth, R.I. Designed by one of the great names in modern golf course architecture, Donald Steel, the course boasts traditional Scottish-style revetted sod bunkers, few in number but strategically placed for maximum impact on play.
Taking part in the Adams Cup for UCF will be Greg Eason, Michael Visacki, Jose Joia, Kyle Wilshire and 2011 Adams Cup individual medalist Ricardo Gouveia.
