ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The 2012 preseason camp came to end on Saturday afternoon for the UCF volleyball team when the Gold defeated the Black 3-1 (27-25, 25-16, 19-25, 26-24) in the second Black and Gold intra-squad scrimmage of camp.
Head coach Todd Dagenais stressed throughout camp that finding a lead setter to replace All-American Rachel Vukson was paramount to his team's future success. After the match concluded, Dagenais spoke to the media and felt confident in naming redshirt sophomore Marie Reiterova the starting setter.
I think Marie Reiterova has absolutely stepped up and established herself as the lead setter, Dagenais explained. I'm really excited because I feel like now we have a lead setter and can start building our offense around that.
The Gold took the first set 27-25 on the strength of redshirt freshman Kayla Keller. The San Antonio, Texas, native tallied six kills and two digs in the first set en route to a monster afternoon that saw her finish with a team-high 24 kills, 15 digs and a stellar .348 hitting percentage.
In the second frame, the Gold once again was victorious as they took the set, 25-16. Reiterova dished out 12 of her 40 assists and Keller added six kills and was joined by redshirt junior Angelica Crump who chipped in with five her 12 kills.
The Black broke through in the third set as Keller switched teams and led the way with six kills. Assistant head coach Michelle Chatman, the oldest player on the court, did not show her age as she picked up four blocks in the frame. The fifth-year coach finished the day with 11 kills and a game-high seven blocks.
The Gold put it away in the fourth backed by senior Meredith Murphy who helped fuel a late rally with seven of her team-high 23 digs. Murphy, who solidified herself as the team's starting libero with a strong preseason camp, was happy with the way the team has progressed.
The regular season will kick off in just six days as the Knights will square off against Creighton in the USF Invitational in Tampa on Aug. 24. The home opener takes place Aug. 31 as the team hosts Columbia in the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Classic.
