ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Ricardo Gouveia saw his outstanding run at United States Amateur come to an end Friday. Gouveia dropped his quarterfinal match to Michael Weaver of Fresno, Calif. by a 4 & 3 score. The tournament is being played at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
Gouveia and Weaver were all square after both carded scores of 4 on the Par-4 first hole. But a bogey on No. 2 left Gouveia trailing for the first time in the match play portion of the tournament. Weaver used a birdie on the Par-5 fifth to go 2-Up. Weaver took advantage of Gouveia bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9 to go on top 4-Up and he held on from there.
This was the second major amateur tournament of the summer for Gouveia, who reached the Round of 16 at the British Amateur in June.
An honorable mention All-America selection by PING and Golfweek, Gouveia was also the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year in 2011-12. He earned PING All-Southeast Region honors and was a member of the All-C-USA first team. Gouveia participated in all 12 events this past season. He posted a team-low 71.5 stroke average and had 20 rounds of par or better. Gouveia recorded five Top 10 performances. At the NCAA Championship, Gouveia tied for 37th. He helped the Knights advance to the championship with a strong showing at the NCAA Regionals, tying for 18th at the tournament in Stanford, Calif.
The native of Almancil, Portugal helped the Knights win three tournament titles last season. UCF spent the entire campaign ranked in the Top 25 nationally, climbing as high as No. 6.
Gouveia and the UCF men's golf squad begin their 2012-13 season Sept. 8-9 at the Northern Intercollegiate in Sugar Grove, Ill.
