ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The start of preseason drills is closing in, so football season at UCF is right around the corner. And for many here in the football-crazed Sunshine State, that moment can't get here soon enough.

From now until drills begin in August, we here at UCFAthletics.com will be highlighting a UCF player to watch for the coming season and the expectations for that player.

The Knights open the season Aug. 30 at Akron. A week later the Knights travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face Ohio State and new coach Urban Meyer. The home-opener at Bright House Networks Stadium is Sept. 15 against FIU. And the Knights will close the non-conference portion of the schedule on Sept. 29 with a marquee home game against Missouri.

UCF football season tickets are currently available for as low as $140, while single-game tickets are also on sale. For more information and to place an order, call the UCF Ticket Office at (407) 823-1000 or visit UCFAthletics.com.

Here is a closer look at one of the key Knights expected to make a big impact this season:

NAME: Jonathan Davis
POSITION: Outside linebacker
HOMETOWN: Lawrenceville, Ga.
NUMBER: 11
HEIGHT, WEIGHT, CLASS: 5-9, 202, senior

2011 STATS: He ranked fifth on the team in total tackles last season with 44 stops. He had three sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss and two pass break-ups. He played in 11 games, starting eight of them. Davis was named to Phil Steele's All-C-USA Third Team.

BEST MOMENT: Against Florida International, Davis racked up nine tackles (six solo stops), two tackles for loss and a pass break-up.

WHAT LIES AHEAD: Davis cleared up any questions about his size or ability to play the linebacker position last season after making the switch from tailback in 2010. He was quite the playmaker for UCF, disrupting opposing offenses with his speed off the edge and his ability to avoid blockers. The hope now is to get Davis more involved in defending the pass because of his agility and quickness. And because there's so much youth among the linebacking corps, Davis will be looked on to become more of a leader for the Knights' defense this season. Poor decisions and have hurt Davis somewhat in the past, but he showed improved maturity last season and the Knights are hoping for even better things this season.
