ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The College Football Performance Awards released its Special Teams Watch List Monday, and three UCF players received recognition. Sophomore wide receiver Rannell Hall (Miami, Fla.) was placed on the Kickoff Returner Trophy list, while senior wideout Quincy McDuffie (Orlando, Fla.) and senior running back Latavius Murray (Nedrow, N.Y.) were given spots on the All-Purpose Trophy list.
Hall burst onto the college football scene as a true freshman in 2011, but it was not until the sixth game of the season when he found his rhythm. At SMU, he returned a kickoff for the first time in his career, and ultimately went on to finish fifth in the country in kickoff returns. Hall had 23 returns for 714 yards and a 31.0 average, collecting at least 100 return yards in four of the final six contests of the season.
At the end of 2011, Hall served as the lone true freshman from any school to be voted onto the All-Conference USA First Team. He also was the first freshman kick returner since Louisville's Broderick Clark in 2002 to be named to the first team.
Leading the Knights with 43 receptions for 482 yards in his first year as a full-time starter in 2011, McDuffie has 64-career receptions, 752 yards and four touchdowns at UCF. On special teams, he ranks second in school history with three kickoff returns for touchdowns, third with 1,919 yards and fourth with a 26.29 return average.
Murray, who received two CFPA weekly honors in 2011, was selected as the team MVP following another dynamic season on the gridiron. He ranked second on the squad with 549 rushing yards and first among running backs with a 5.6 average on the ground. That was highlighted by his 233-yard performance vs. UTEP, which was the fourth-best outing in UCF history. For his career, Murray sits fifth with a 5.17 average as well as fifth with 22 rushing touchdowns. He also was a huge threat in the passing game as a junior, hauling in 17 receptions for 242 yards and a touchdown, while he returned a kickoff 69 yards for a touchdown at Southern Miss.
The goal of CFPA is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
As prominent scholars from a wide variety of disciplines note, CFPA eliminates the politics and biases that vitiate balloting-based awards. Furthermore, CFPA has received praise from both Republican and Democratic White House officials for promoting objectivity and fairness in college football.
In May, senior Jordan Rae (Weston, Fla.) was tagged on the Rimington Trophy Watch List, which is handed out annually to the top center in the nation.
