ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Sophomores Greg Eason and Ricardo Gouveia of the UCF men's golf team were awarded for their strong play this past season when they both earned PING All-America honorable mention recognition Wednesday. The pair helped the Knights enjoy a memorable 2011-12 campaign, which was capped by the program's fifth appearance in the NCAA Championship.
"I am so happy for both Greg and Ricardo," UCF head coach Bryce Wallor said. "These two young men have worked diligently for their own success and for the success of our program. It has been their top priority to better the golf program at UCF and they are certainly accomplishing that goal. We are thankful to have these two young men represent the UCF golf family."
Eason concluded the campaign in fine fashion. A native of Leicester City, England, he tied for 13th at the NCAA Championship at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. He concluded the event, which included 156 golfers, at 2-over 215. Eason took medalist honors at the Conference USA Championship in Texarkana, Ark., with a 208 (-8). Eason also earned a spot on the All-C-USA Second Team.
The C-USA Newcomer of the Year, Gouveia participated in all 12 events this past season. He posted a team-low 71.5 stroke average and had 20 rounds of par or better. Gouveia recorded five-top 10 performances. At the NCAA Championship, Gouveia tied for 37th. He helped the Knights advance to the championship with a strong showing at the NCAA Regionals, tying for 18th at the tournament in Stanford, Calif.
In addition to receiving the C-USA Newcomer of the Year award, Gouveia was selected to the PING All-Southeast Region Team and the All-C-USA First Team. Last week, he received All-America honorable mention recognition from Golfweek. A native of Almancil, Portugal, Gouveia was in his first campaign in Orlando after transferring from Lynn.
Eason and Gouveia helped the Knights win three tournament titles during the season. UCF spent the entire campaign ranked in the top-25 nationally, moving to as high as No. 6.
