Visit Cheering for Caitlin | Register for the Camp
ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - A few months ago, A.J. Rompza learned about Caitlin Downing's incredible story. Inspired by the little girl's courageous battle with an inoperable and untreatable brain stem tumor, Rompza wanted to help Caitlin and her family, who reside in Oviedo.
The former UCF point guard got in touch with the family of the five-year old to offer support. Rompza, who concluded his collegiate career this past spring, decided to organize a youth basketball camp that would not only help create awareness about Caitlin and her fight against Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, but also help raise funds for the Downing Family.
The A.J. Rompza Skills Camp is set for July 20-22 at Corner Lake Middle School in East Orange County. Rompza is donating a portion of the proceeds to the Downing Family, and the money will help pay for medical and travel bills.
"When I heard about what Caitlin was going through, and what her family was going through, I really wanted to help in any way I could," Rompza said. "If I can help bring some happiness to Caitlin or to her family, that would be great."
Rompza expects youngsters to learn how to improve their basketball skills during the camp, but most importantly have fun, just as he did for four memorable seasons as a Knight.
"I love the game of basketball and basketball has done so much for me," Rompza said. "I want children of all skill levels to be able to learn and have fun at the camp. Basketball is such a fun sport and I want to give the kids a chance to have fun playing and learning over the summer."
At the same time, Rompza hopes that the donation to the Downing family can offer them joy as well.
