CORAL GABLES, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The No. 15 UCF baseball team begins its run in the NCAA Tournament at the Coral Gables Regional Friday afternoon when it takes on Missouri State at 2 p.m. The second-seeded Knights (43-15) are making their 11th NCAA appearance in program history.
The first meeting between the Knights and Bears (39-20) is shaping up to be a dandy. UCF will send sophomore RHP Ben Lively (9-2, 3.23 ERA) to the mound against MSU RHP Nick Petree (10-3, 0.92 ERA). Each pitching staff has been lights out this season with UCF owning an ERA of 3.33 and Missouri State leading the nation with a 2.51 ERA.
The double-elimination regional as a whole is statistically the toughest in the nation with the average RPI sitting at 38.75. After the Knights and Bears go head-to-head on Friday, top-seeded Miami will battle No. 4 Stony Brook at 7 p.m. The winners on Friday will play at 7 p.m. Saturday night and the losers will take the field Saturday at 2.
