ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - After making some positive contributions for the Knights as a rookie this past season, Kasey Wilson has some definitive goals for his sophomore year. And the forward will be working all summer to make sure that he continues to help his team as a sophomore.
Wilson appeared in 29 contests as a freshman and averaged 3.1 points and 2.2 boards in 7.4 minutes of action per contest. His minutes, and productivity, grew as the season progressed. The North Port, Fla., native averaged 6.3 points and 3.6 boards while shooting 55.3 percent from the field over the last 12 games of the year.
Now Wilson, who should see considerable playing time at power forward next season, is working diligently to improve his individual game and help the Knights enjoy more success in 2012-13. He is focusing on his strength this summer, spending ample time in the weight room with strength and conditioning coach Ben O'Donnell in an effort to gain around 15 pounds of muscle, which should certainly help him compete in the paint this upcoming year.
"One of my goals is to be a big-time rebounder," he said. "I think I am capable of that with my athleticism. Regardless of the minutes that I am getting, I want to make the best of them. Everyone would like big minutes, but if I can get out there and contribute as much as I can, hopefully I can help."
Wilson also now understands what it takes to be successful on the college level. And he says that knowledge is helping him this summer during his workouts.
"The speed and the physicality of the game were the biggest adjustments. I know I need to in the weight room. I need to protect the ball. I feel like my freshman year really helped me out a lot. I know what I have to learn. There were a lot of things I thought I knew, but I really didn't."
