STATE COLLEGE, Penn. (UCFAthletics.com) - Freshman Monifa Sealy delivered a strong even-par performance in on first day of the NCAA East Regional on the Blue Course at Penn State for the UCF women's golf team. The No. 38 Knights are currently 10th overall (+13) and just five shots back from fourth place.
No. 25 South Carolina paces the field at even par after day one and No. 2 Alabama (+4), No. 15 Florida (+6), No. 29 Washington (+8), No. 32 Texas (+8) and No. 12 Texas A&M (+8) round out the top six teams.
Starting on the first hole of the 6,253 par-72 course, Sealy managed a birdie on both the front and back nine to tie her for sixth place overall in the tournament. The even par performance by the Glencoe, Trinidad and Tobago native is the eighth time she has either been at par or under during a round in her first season on campus.
Junior Carolin Pinegger finished the opening round with a three-over 75 after birdieing the par-4 second hole and par-5 ninth. She is currently in a tie for 39th overall.
Freshman Katie Mitchell and sophomore Kaitlyn Price rounded out the scorers for the Knights after shooting a 76 (+4) and 78 (+6), respectively. The duo from the 904 (Jacksonville/Fernandina Beach) area code is tied for 51st and 72nd after round one.
Round two begins at 7:30 a.m. for the Knights when junior Valentina Fontaine (+8) tees off on the first hole.
After the three-day tournament concludes, the top eight teams from each region will advance to the NCAA Championships May 22-25 in Nashville, Tenn. This is UCF's first appearance in the postseason since 2009.
