ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The future is bright for the UCF men's tennis program. Not only did the Knights finish the 2012 campaign on a high note, but head coach Bobby Cashman's squad has secured the talents of three talented recruits.
Amar Hromic, William Kwok and Pedro Wagner were all highly-sought after junior players who Cashman expects will make a major impact with the Knights when they arrive on campus this fall. The program also returns some talent, led by Jorge Blasco. As a junior, he won 11 contests during dual-match play at the No. 1 singles spot and earned a spot on the All-Conference USA Second Team.
Cashman recently took time to talk about the future of his program and the excitement surrounding the Knights entering next season.
How excited are you about the future of your program?
Bobby Cashman: "We are very excited. We have been so close, but our incoming class will be the class that pushes us to that next level. They will help us compete for championships. They give us a viable chance to be an NCAA contender."
Do the incoming freshmen share any common traits?
"The common thread is that they have all been successful on the national and international level. That breeds success. With their experience internationally, and in their own country, it helps in moving forward. They are confident kids who want to do well."
How excited are your returning players about the direction of the team?
"They are real excited. They have seen how we did a good job at the end of this season, which is really important. That helps us jump into next season. They are happy that these recruits signed with us because they know that we can be more successful as a group."
How much confidence will Jorge Blasco have entering his senior season?
"He will be better next year I believe. He did not play at all in the fall. He is going to play some tournaments back home in Spain this summer. He is really looking forward to coming back and he wants to be ranked. Jorge is really looking forward to coming back and having a great year."
