ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - For the first time in 363 days, the seventh-ranked UCF baseball team was unable to win its Conference USA weekend series as Memphis took game three, 1-0. Sunday's pitchers' duel was seen by 1,129 fans, which brought the weekend total up to 4,808, the fifth-most attended series in school history.
Junior Brian Adkins and Memphis' Chris Joiner went toe-to-toe for nine innings as the Tigers were able to score on a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the sixth to give the Knights (35-10, 13-5) just their second loss on Sunday this year.
It was the longest outing of Adkins' career as his previous high was seven innings. The Orlando native went the distance while scattering eight hits for one run on one walk and a pair of strikeouts.
"Brian definitely picked up the pitching staff today," head coach Terry Rooney said. "He pitched his heart out. What a game. Brian did a great job and so did their pitcher (Joiner) too. That's college baseball."
With the defense turning three double plays to aid Adkins on the mound, the offense was unable to get in a rhythm. After three singles in the first three innings, Joiner kept the Knights out of the hit column until Ronnie Richardson hit a double to the left-field wall in the bottom of the eighth.
In the ninth, the Knights attempted another rally on the Tigers as Alex Friedrich hit his 18th double into left field, but was left on third base after two groundouts finished the game.
UCF will look to get back to its winning ways Wednesday when it heads to DeLand for the first of two midweek contests with Stetson. The game can be heard live on 740-AM The Game with Marc Daniels calling the action beginning at 6:15 p.m.
