ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Enjoying its best season in over a decade, the UCF women's golf team heads to Gulf Shores, Ala., for the Conference USA Championship at the Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club. The three-day tournament begins Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. EDT.
So far in 2011-12, the No. 38 Knights have won two tournaments for the first time in over 10 years (2000-01), including the Knights and Pirates Invitational most recently in Melbourne and the Lady Northern Invite during the fall.
Pacing the team as of late has been junior Carolin Pinegger. In the last three tournaments, the Germany native has notched two 15th-place finishes and a tie for third at the Knights and Pirates Invite. She will be at the No. 1 for UCF this week.
After tying for third with Pinegger in Melbourne, Katie Mitchell will tee off at No. 2 for the squad. The rookie from Fernandina Beach has now carded six top-20 finishes and four top-10 placements.
Fellow freshman Heather Proctor will appear at No. 3, followed by Kaitlyn Price at No. 4 and Monifa Sealy at No. 5.
Last year in Gulf Shores, the Knights finished fifth overall (912) and just eight strokes off the lead. The highest finish for UCF at the league championship came in 2009 at Tulsa when the squad placed runner-up.
