ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Despite 15-20 mph winds that continued to increase throughout the racing, the UCF novice rowing team began the spring season by claiming their second-consecutive Robin Yeuell Trophy Saturday at the 32nd Annual Metro Cup Regatta.
Assistant rowing coach, and head of the novice squad, Tracey Tallman is pleased with the Knights' season-opening performance and is looking forward to seeing the squad progress throughout the year.
"Saturday was a very successful day for these ladies," Tallman said. "They handled themselves great for racing on a non-familiar course for their first spring season race and dealing with mother nature and her wind. The best part is we took two of our novice boats and raced them up into varsity events and they won one and came in third in the other, great showing. This is a great place for us to start and we are ready to go up from here for the rest of the season."
In the first race of the day, UCF's "A" boat of Rebecca Campbell, Eden Veldkamp, Cristina Sotomayor, Chelsea McCaulley and Janice Gowen notched a first-place finish in the Women's Novice 4+ with a time of 8:21.1. UCF's "B" squad of Maria Rivera. Jackie Puterbaugh, Julie Auther, Carla Ortiz and Hannah Witt also finished in first place, topping Duquesne by over a minute in the Women's Novice 4+ "B" race.
In spite of participating in a varsity event, the squad of Rebecca Campbell, Angelie Denziard, Allison Glisch, Kayla Thieken and Sydney Solan posted a first-place showing with a time of 8:15.3 in the Women's Varsity 4+.
Returning in the noon Women's Varsity 8+, the Knights finished ahead of host Rollins for a third-place finish with a boat consisting of Campbell, Denziard, Glisch, Thieken, Casey Craig, Veldkamp, Sotomayor, McCaulley and Solan.
The entire team will return to action next week in a scrimmage against Nova Southeastern, and will then travel west for the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, March 16-18.
