ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF softball team returns to Conference USA action as it hosts East Carolina in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and in a single game at noon Sunday. Many former Knights will be honored between the doubleheader games as part of Alumni Weekend festivities at the UCF Softball Complex.
UCF, 23-10 overall and 3-3 in C-USA, has showcased elite pitching all season, as it leads C-USA in wins, ERA, complete games, opponents' batting average and strikeouts. The Black and Gold will look to gain some much needed ground in C-USA as they are currently tied for fifth with the Pirates who are also 3-3 in conference.
UCF is just 4-17 all-time against East Carolina, but the Knights won their first series against the Pirates in 2011 as they took 2-of-3 in Greenville.
East Carolina comes into the game riding a season-high five game winning streak and holds a 15-17 record and a 3-7 mark on the road. The Pirates' offense is led by senior outfielder Suzanne Riggs, who is hitting .347 with a team-leading six home runs and 23 RBI. The Pirates' top pitcher is freshman Sarah Christian, who is 12-10 with a 3.61 ERA in 27 appearances.
The three weekend games will conclude a busy week for the Knights. In addition to defeating North Florida 3-0 on Wednesday, Mackenzie Audas, Alex Hartshorn, Blaire Kelley and Farrah Sullivan and 2011 graduate Abby McClain were announced as recipients of the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal, which honors athletes that have posted cumulative GPAs of at least 3.75.
Upcoming home games include a sold-out April 11 contest against in-state rival Florida. Season tickets are $25 and are available online at UCFAthletics.com and Ticketmaster.com or by calling the UCF Athletics Ticket Office at (407) 823-1000.
