ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's tennis team picked up its second-straight victory thanks to a 5-1 win over West Virginia Wednesday at the UCF Tennis Complex. The Knights jumped to 6-9 on the season while the Mountaineers fell to 4-12.
Only two doubles matches and five singles contests were on tap during the afternoon as West Virginia had just five players available. At the No. 1 doubles position, Genevieve Lorbergs and Courtney Griffith got past Mary Chupa and Ikttesh Chahal, 8-5. And at No. 2, Jenna Doerfler partnered with Alexis Rodriguez to defeat Veronica Cardenas and Emily Mathis, 8-6, to take the overall doubles point.
Holding the early 1-0 lead, the Knights earned four singles points to grab the team win. Rodriguez had no trouble posting her victory, not surrendering a game in a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 2 against Mathis. Lorbergs also breezed to a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 vs. Chupa. Closing out the day, Doerfler delivered a 6-4, 6-3 victory vs. Cardenas at No. 3 and Griffith notched a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Catie Wickline at No. 5.
UCF's nine-match homestand comes to a close when it hosts Stetson Wednesday, April 4, at 4 p.m.
