AUSTIN, Texas. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF rowing team closed out its weekend in the state capital of Texas with eight victories in twenty races at the Longhorn Invitational.
Saturday morning, the Knights were swept by host Texas in the second varsity four, first varsity four, second varsity eight, first varsity eight and novice eight races.
But later in the day, the first varsity four boat of coxswain Lea Kram, Kayla Thieken, Victoria Carroll, Shelby Flynn and Kelly Thiele claimed UCF's lone victory of the day with an 18-second win over Oklahoma.
On Sunday morning, the Knights lost their first race of the day, the second varsity four against San Diego. UCF rebounded with a sweep of Kansas State, finishing the weekend off with four-consecutive wins.
UCF's first varsity four boat highlighted the weekend for the Knights. It started the winning streak Sunday, and claimed three victories in four contests for the weekend.
The second varsity eight boat of coxswain Katherine Kutash, Shannon Riley, Katherine Krueger, Michelle Haves, Nicole Lacek, Amanda Schimian, Noelle Crosby, Angelie Denizard and Anita Schmidtwon with a time of 7:27.4.
The varsity eight boat of coxswain Claire Frenkel, Calena Illan, Alyssa Egan, Lucia Pinelli, Chelsey Lauzon, Nina Morgan, Kara Johannesen, Camille Everett and Margaret Lahmeyerwon a nail-biter over San Diego with a time of 7:15.1, only 1.6 seconds faster than Kansas State.
Led by coxswain Rebecca Campbell, UCF's novice eight boat concluded the tournament with a dominating performance against Kansas State. The Knights' boat of Carla Ortiz, Janice Gowen, Casey Craig, Julie Arthur, Hannah Witt, Chelsea McCaulley, Jackie Puterbaugh and Morgan McCabecrossed the finish line in 8:12.1.
UCF returns to action on Saturday, March 24 with a home event against Conference USA-foe Tennessee at Lake Pickett.
