ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - For the second year in a row, a Knight was selected as the South Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year. Freshman Octavious Freeman was bestowed with the honor Monday as voted by the region-specific coaches, the USTFCCCA announced.
The freshman from Lake Wales, Fla., won Conference USA titles in the 60 Meters and 200 Meters and has the nation's fastest time recorded this season in the 60 Meters. Her time of 7.19 seconds tied a school and freshman record. Freeman received C-USA Female Athlete of the Week honors three times during the indoor season for her efforts and is the first true freshman ever named to the Bowerman Watch List.
Freeman is one of two freshmen in the country to be recognized with either a track or field regional award. Clemson's Dezerea Bryant was chosen as the Southeast Region's Track Athlete honoree.
Freeman receives the award one year after senior Jackie Coward earned the distinction. The pair has automatically qualified for this upcoming weekend's NCAA Track and Field Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho. ESPN3.com and NCAA.com will provide live coverage of the championships.
