HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (UCFAthletics.com) - Freshman Monifa Sealy (Glencoe, Trinidad and Tobago) carded a 1-under 70 to lead the No. 41 UCF women's golf team on the first day of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate from Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The Knights finished the first day tied for third after totaling a 13-over 297 on the par-71 course.
No. 2 Alabama entered the clubhouse on the first day atop the leaderboard at 4-over. UCF is tied with No. 9 Georgia and No. 31 Virginia.
Sealy, who now has eight rounds of par or better on the year, spent most of the day in the top spot after carding birdies on holes three, four and eight to finish the front nine 1-under. She would par the back nine, but carded two-straight birdies on holes 14 and 15 to finish the first round in second place individually.
Fellow rookie Katie Mitchell (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) held her own on the 6,160-yard course with a 2-over 73 to put her in a tie for 10th. Already racking up six top-20 finishes in her first year, Mitchell was able to card a birdie on the par-3 eighth hole.
Junior Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany), sophomore Kaitlyn Price and freshman Robyn Doig finished the round in ties for 31, 53 and 60, respectively.
The Knights benefited from early tee times as conditions deteriorated as the day went on. Thunderstorms are in the forecast for Saturday afternoon, moving tee times up to 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
