PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - With a strong showing in its second round, the No. 17 UCF men's golf team increased its lead to three strokes at the John Hayt Invitational.
The Knights are in first-place at 598 (+12) after two rounds at the Sawgrass Country Club.
Sophomore Ricardo Gouveia (Almancil, Portugal) had the best score of any Knight on the day with a 72 (E). His strong performance was highlighted with an eagle on the 11th hole. After starting the day tied for 30th, Gouveia's play vaulted him into a tie for 18th.
Senior Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) had another solid round. Schneider fired a one-over 73. His birdie on the 18th hole capped off a 36 (E) on the back nine. He is currently in a three-way tie for seventh.
Trying to stay in the top 20, sophomore Jose Joia (Lagoa, Portugal), has found success on the eighth hole in both rounds. He has birdied it twice. Joia currently is currently tied for 13th, with a +2 (146).
Sophomore Greg Eason (Leicester City, England) repeated his great play from yesterday's back nine. With a 35 (-1) on the back nine, Eason shot a 73 (+1) on the day. His five birdies were a team-high for the second round.
Like his teammates, sophomore Kyle Wilshire (Georgetown, Ky.) has found success on the 11th hole. He has birdied it in both rounds.
The Knights are 10-under on the 11th hole, including two eagles. Both times a Knight has eagled the 11th hole, they have went on to post a team-high score on the day.
After shooting a 71 (-1) on the day, TCU's Julien Brun is the new tournament leader. He currently has a one-stroke lead on teammate Johan de Beer and yesterday's leader, LSU's Sang Yi.
With one round left, the Knights hold a three-stroke lead over North Texas, No. 8 Arkansas and Tennessee. The three schools are tied for second with a +15 (291). Fans can follow tomorrow's final round with live stats updates on golfstat.com
