SORRENTO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - After an unseasonably warm winter in central Florida, mother nature provided some of the coldest weather of 2012 on the first day of the UCF Challenge at RedTail Golf Club. With temperatures only topping out at 50, the UCF women's golf team shot a 295 (+7) in the first of three rounds and currently sit at No. 8 in the standings.
No. 22 Baylor leads the way after day one, shooting four-under 284 on Sunday.
Leading the way on the first day of action was sophomore Kaitlyn Price (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.). After getting off to a rough start, Price weathered the par-72 course to shoot even for the day and sits in a tie for 13th. With bogeys on holes two and three, Price was able to drop birdies on six, seven and 13 to boast UCF's top score.
Playing at No. 4, junior Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) trails Price by a stroke after compiling a one-over 73. Tied for 22nd, Pinegger carded four birdies on the day on holes three, seven, 12 and 15.
Both freshmen Robyn Doig (Seaforth, Ontario) and Katie Mitchell (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) finished the first day of action at three-over 75. Playing at No. 5, Doig dropped in three birdies while Mitchell at No. 2 carded two of her own on the day.
Freshman Monifa Sealy (Glencoe, Trinidad & Tobago) rounded out the top-five for the Knights after shooting a five-over 77 at No.1. Sealy had a rough go on the front nine, but steadied out on the back with a + 1 37.
Playing as individuals for the Knights were junior Valentina Fontaine (+3, 75), freshman Heather Proctor (+5, 77) and junior Jordyn Hage (+6, 78). Fontaine, a junior from Santiago, Chile, leads the group and is tied for 43rd.
Round two from RedTale will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. with Sealy teeing off first for the Knights.
