ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - As the final days of 2011 fade away and 2012 approaches, we here at UCFAthletics.com want to look back at the best moments of the past year and honor arguably the most significant 12 months in school history.
No. 10 Moment
No. 9 Moment
No. 8 Moment
Here is a breakdown of the No. 7 moment of 2011 for UCF Athletics:
MOMENT: Women's track & field wins C-USA Indoor and Outdoor titles in same year
DATES: Feb. 26 (Indoor), May 16 (Outdoor)
SITES: Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse (Indoor), Rice's Holloway Field/Ley Track (Outdoor)
SIGNIFICANCE: UCF established itself as the new powerhouse in C-USA track, winning both the Indoor and Outdoor titles in the same season. UCF previously had never finished higher than third in the Indoor competition. The Outdoor title was the second in as many seasons for the Knights. Also, coach Caryl Smith Gilbert won her third C-USA Coach of the Year award.
WHAT HAPPENED: At the Indoor meet, UCF captured a school-record 123.5 points. Aurieyall Scott tied a freshman record and a UCF mark with a 7.24 time in the 60-meters. Jackie Coward won her second straight 60-meter hurdles event, while Dominique Booker captured the 200-meter title. In the Outdoor event, UCF was dominant in all of the track events to roll to another title. Coward was named the Performer of the Meet after winning the 100 and 400-meter hurdles events. Scott was the High Point Scorer and the Freshman of the Meet.
THEY SAID IT: ``I am very proud of the entire team. We won with a total-team effort and as a coach that is all you can ask for,'' Smith Gilbert said after the Indoor win. ``Everyone understood what they needed to do individually so that we could achieve our collective goal, which was winning this championship. To have all the personal awards accompany the team achievement makes the day very special. To have Aurieyall win and pick up that honor is great, but having it come alongside the championship makes it that much more special.''
