ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The last time the UCF women's basketball team defeated an ACC opponent, a gallon of gas cost an average of 89 cents, "Top Gun" ruled the box office and no Knight on the current team had been born.
UCF (5-5) bested Virginia Tech (3-7) on Sunday afternoon, 41-32, earning its first win over an ACC opponent since 1986 to end a 0-25 streak against such opponents.
Senior guard Aisha Patrick recorded her third double-double of the year with 13 points and 13 rebounds while junior guard Gevenia Carter added 11 points. Freshman Andrea Hines contributed six rebounds, five points, and a game-high four assists in her first career start.
After playing to a 17-13 advantage in the first half, the Knights put together an 11-2 run midway through the second half to take its largest lead of the game, 36-21. Patrick accounted for seven of those points, including a brilliant fastbreak layup to cap the run thanks to a hustle play from Carter, who came up with a steal and assist while on the ground at half court.
The Knights' defensive performance limited the Hokies to 32 points, which ranks as the lowest offensive output by a UCF opponent in 27 years.
Up next, the Knights travel to No. 3 Notre Dame on Tuesday at 7 p.m. eastern.
