ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF football head coach George O'Leary announced he has hired Derrick Ansley as the Knights' defensive backs coach. Ansley is coming off two seasons as an assistant with the secondary at the University of Alabama.
Ansley is the second addition from Alabama to the Knights' staff, as Drew Hughes was hired earlier this month as UCF's director of player personnel following five seasons with the Crimson Tide.
In 2010, Alabama finished 10-3, capped off by a 49-7 thumping of Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl. The Crimson Tide ranked 13th in the nation in passing defense, as well as third in scoring defense and fifth in total defense.
So far in 2011, Alabama claims first in the country in all five major defensive categories: passing, passing efficiency, rushing, total and scoring. With an 11-1 record, it is busy preparing for the BCS National Championship Game where it will face LSU Jan. 9. In the secondary this year, Alabama's Mark Barron, Dre Kirkpatrick and DeQuan Menzie have all been named All-Americans.
Ansley coached defensive backs for five seasons at Huntingdon College, and competed at the collegiate level for Troy University. He started 40-consecutive games for the Trojans, and finished fifth in the nation with nine interceptions as a junior.
Graduating with a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism from Troy in 2005, Ansley is working on his master's in human environmental sciences from Alabama. He is a native of Tallassee, Ala., and is married to Alaea Ansley.
