ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - On Sunday, the UCF men's tennis team wrapped up its final event of the fall as play concluded at the UCF Invitational. Three Knights were able to pick up singles wins at the UCF Tennis Complex.
The event was the fifth of the fall for the Knights. Arkansas, Auburn, Florida Gulf Coast and Miami were also in action at the three-day tournament.
Senior Eugene Dolgovykh (Palm Coast, Fla.) rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Florida Gulf Coast's Steve Binninger. Sophomore Matthew Gladstone (Surfside, Fla.) held off Miami's Santiago Nieto, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1. Facing Dean Tsamas of Florida Gulf Coast, sophomore Mitch Thams (Queensland, Australia) eased to a 6-1, 6-4 win.
UCF was unable to compete in doubles Sunday due to inclement weather.
"Overall we competed much better today. Everyone fought hard, but unfortunately we came up a little short. Matt Gladstone had a great win. He saved seven match points in the first set to go on in win in the tiebreaker and played a very good third set," UCF head coach Bobby Cashman said.
UCF will be in action again on Jan. 6 when the team begins play at the UCF Spring Invitational. The Knights will then open their dual-match campaign on Jan. 28 against visiting Jacksonville.
