WINTER PARK, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF's women's tennis team returned to Winter Park Friday to open up the Rollins College C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational. During day one, the Knights combined to post an impressive 6-1 record in singles and doubles action.
The top seed in the main draw, Alexis Rodriguez received a bye into the second round where she quickly got past Nova Southeastern's Dominique Wimmer, 6-1, 6-2.
Over in Flight B, Jenna Doerfler also earned a bye and only dropped four games in her 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Saint Leo's Jeanette McDonald in the second round. Meanwhile in Flight C, Taylor Dubins moved on with a 6-2, 6-4 win vs. Selma Hidass of Saint Leo, and Courtney Griffith stayed alive thanks to a 6-1, 6-2 showing over Nova Southeastern's Kamy Blackwood.
And in doubles play, Dubins and partner Andrea Yacaman advanced in Flight A with an 8-4 decision against Stefania Tkach and Sara Stosljevic from Rollins, and Rodriguez combined with Genevieve Lorbergs for an 8-3 win vs. Saint Leo's Hidass and Adrianna Daskiewicz.
The Black and Gold is scheduled to resume play in Winter Park with day two Saturday, however weather may alter those plans.
