DeLAND, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Battling a strong head wind of 10-12 mph, the UCF novice rowing team didn't let the blustery conditions deter them from winning the Novice 4 and Novice 8 races at the Hatter Classic Saturday morning. Racing the 5,000M course that flows through the St. Johns River and into Lake Beresford, UCF was able to top host Stetson and in-state foes Embry Riddle and FIT.
Assistant coach Tracey Tallman's novice team produced two winners on the day in its collegiate debut.
The Knights' Novice 4 team of Stephanie Kovacs, Janice Gowen, Allie Glisch, Kayla Thieken and Jackie Puterbaugh won the event in a time of 23:56. The first-place boat topped second-place Stetson by over a minute.
Three UCF boats competed two hours later in the Novice 8 as the wind picked up make conditions a little more difficult. The Knights swept the event with all three of their boats finishing in the top three. The A boat crossed the line in 22:57, while the B and C boats clocked in a 23:28 and 24:55, respectively.
Both varsity and novice teams will end their seasons next weekend in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Head of the Hooch.
