ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFathletics.com) - The Black team came from behind and managed to hold off a Gold rally to capture the 2011 UCF Black and Gold World series on Friday night. The teams played to a 2-2 tie in game three at the baseball complex in front of a lively crowd that braved the elements.
Freshman Erik Barber got things going for the Gold team in the bottom of the fourth when he hit a ball down the left field line for a triple. Freshman JoMarcos Woods sent him home on a sac fly to right to put the Gold team on the scoreboard, 1-0.
Junior lefty Joe Rogers took the mound with one runner on and one out in the top of the sixth, but the Gold team managed to get out of the inning unscathed when junior Nick Carrillo hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
The Black team's bats finally came alive in the top of the eighth when junior centerfielder Ronnie Richardson was hit by a pitch before speeding to third base off a Spencer Haynes single to right field. With D.J. Hicks up to bat, Haynes stole second on the throw, and Richardson was able to steal home safely to tie the game at 1-1.
Carrillo singled before senior outfielder Alex Friedrich doubled to center fielder where Ethan Smith bobbled the ball to give Carrillo enough time to make it home and up the score, 2-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Travis Shreve set the tone for the Gold with a single to right field in the leadoff spot. After advancing to second on Darnell Sweeney's at bat, he reached third on a wild pitch. Ryan Breen singled to drive home Shreve and tie the score, 2-2.
James Vasquez walked, putting two runners on base, but Barber hit a grounder into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
This ends the 2011 fall campaign for the Knights as they will continue with individual workouts until the 2012 season begins in February.
