FRENCH LICK, Ind. (UCFAthletics.com) - It was the tale of two rounds for the UCF women's golf team Monday on the Donald Ross Golf Course at French Lick. The Knights turned in a first round +24 (308), but came back to shoot just six-over (290) on the second 18 holes of the day to finish fourth (+30) after 36 holes.
The Knights trail only Ohio State (+15), Michigan (+23) and Iowa State (+27).
After a shotgun start in the morning, the Knights played 36 continuous holes until completion late Monday afternoon. The squad finished the biggest turnaround from first to second-round scores, tying Ohio State for the lowest second-round performance (290).
With two top-20 finishes under her belt prior to Monday, freshman Katie Mitchell (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) turned in another solid day for the Knights, carding a +5 76 and the first sub-par round of her collegiate career with a one-under 70. The talented rookie sank four total birdies on Monday and sits in third individually heading into Tuesday's final day of play.
Mitchell wasn't the only rookie to go under-par in the second round as Monifa Sealy (Glencoe, Trinidad and Tobago) bounced back from a first-round 80 to shoot a one-under 70. She is tied for 21st with teammate Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) who shot eight-over for the day with a 76 and 74.
Rounding out the Knights' lineup after the first two rounds was sophomore Kaitlyn Price (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) and freshman Heather Proctor (Ocala, Fla.) who shot +12 (154) and +14 (156), respectively.
The third and final round will begin Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. EDT.
