ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF Volleyball team was honored twice by Conference USA Monday afternoon as senior Rachel Vukson (Oakville, Ontario) and sophomore Angelica Crump (Atlanta, Ga.) were named Setter and Offensive Players of the Week, respectively, by the league offices for their stellar performances in the FGCU Homewood Suites Invitational last weekend.
Aside from the two C-USA awards, UCF also learned that it has received 28 votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association standings, unofficially ranking it at No. 30. If the Knights were to enter the top 25 next week, it would be the first time for the program since joining the Division I ranks in 1984.
"We are very excited that the conference has recognized the accomplishments from the weekend," head coach Todd Dagenais said. "Both of these players were a very important part of a team effort and I'm sure they will tell you that they really relied on each other and on their teammates to be able to have the type of statistics that go into these awards."
These are the fourth and fifth Player of the Week Awards that UCF has received from C-USA since joining the league in 2005.
The duo helped UCF to a 3-0 record this past weekend and a sweep of No. 3 USC, Furman and Florida Gulf Coast in the tournament from Fort Myers.
For Vukson, this is the third time in as many years the senior has won C-USA Setter of the Week, with her first coming when she played at Tulsa. She totaled 124 assists (13.78 per set), 20 digs and chipped in with six block assists. She helped the Knights attain hitting percentages over .300 in each of their three matches, including a weekend-best .424 against FGCU. Vukson was also voted as the must outstanding setter for the tournament.
Crump earned her first C-USA Offensive Player of the Week after totaling 37 kills on 84 attacks for a .357 hitting percentage over the three-match slate. The talented outside hitter had a weekend-best 15 kills against USC, and leads the team with 82 on the season. She was also named MVP of the four-team tournament.
Season tickets for the 2011 season are available now for only $30, which includes 18 regular-season matches at The Venue at UCF and admission to three home tournaments. Also available for purchase this season is the UCF Gold Pass. For $75, the Gold Pass grants the avid Knights fan admission to all home volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball and track & field events.
